Last updated: 19 September 2026

1. About these terms

These terms govern access to and use of Archive.London, including its pages, search tools, indexes, editorial material, photograph previews, metadata and enquiry facilities. By using the website, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the website.

Archive.London is operated by 825 Ventures Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales under company number 16706831, with its registered office at 128 City Road, London, United Kingdom, EC1V 2NX. References to Archive.London, we, us and our mean 825 Ventures Ltd as operator and rights steward of the website and the Robert Harper Photograph Library.

You may contact us at info@825ventures.online.

2. The website

Archive.London presents selected material and catalogue information from the Robert Harper Photograph Library. The website is intended for general viewing, archive discovery, research, editorial reference and licensing enquiries.

The photographs shown online are a limited introduction to a much larger archive. Availability on the website does not mean that a photograph is in the public domain, free to use, cleared for every purpose or immediately available in every format.

We may add, remove, reorganise, correct, restrict or update website content without notice. We do not guarantee that every archive item will remain online or that every service will always be available.

3. No licence by browsing

Access to the website does not transfer ownership and does not grant any licence to copy, download, reproduce, publish, distribute, display, adapt, crop, manipulate, sell, syndicate, train a model on, create a dataset from or otherwise exploit any photograph, scan, caption, catalogue entry, database, design, logo or other protected material.

The limited technical copying that occurs automatically in a browser cache for ordinary personal viewing is permitted only to the extent necessary to use the website lawfully. Any wider use requires prior written permission unless an applicable legal exception clearly permits it.

4. Permitted use

You may:

  • Browse public pages for personal, professional or research evaluation.
  • Link to a public canonical page in a fair and lawful way.
  • Quote a short passage of editorial text where permitted by law, with accurate attribution and a link to the source.
  • Contact us to request research assistance, permissions or a commercial licence.

Any permitted quotation must not be misleading, remove material context, imply endorsement or substitute for the original page.

5. Prohibited use

You must not:

  • Copy, save or reuse website photographs except with our prior written permission or where a legal exception applies.
  • Remove, obscure or alter a watermark, credit, copyright notice, metadata or rights information.
  • Use material in advertising, merchandising, packaging, publishing, broadcasting, film, television, social media, exhibitions, artificial-intelligence systems or commercial presentations without an appropriate licence.
  • Scrape, crawl, harvest or systematically extract images, metadata, captions, names, records or page content except for ordinary search indexing authorised by our published crawler rules.
  • Build, train, fine-tune, benchmark, evaluate or supply an artificial-intelligence or machine-learning model using website content without express written permission.
  • Compile a competing image library, catalogue, dataset, search product or derivative archive.
  • Circumvent access controls, rate limits, watermarks, delivery restrictions or technical protection measures.
  • Probe, scan or test the vulnerability of the website without written authorisation.
  • Introduce malware, automated requests that burden the service, or code intended to interfere with operation.
  • Misrepresent provenance, authorship, identity, date, place, rights status or association.
  • Use a photograph in a defamatory, deceptive, unlawful, discriminatory, pornographic or otherwise seriously harmful context.
  • Suggest that Robert Harper, Archive.London, 825 Ventures Ltd or a depicted person endorses a product, service, cause or political position without written permission.

Our Acceptable Use Policy forms part of these terms.

Photographs, scans, contact sheets, catalogue content, metadata, editorial writing, selection, arrangement, website design, logos and other material may be protected by copyright, database right, trade mark law and other rights.

Unless a page expressly states otherwise, all rights are reserved. The website copyright notice and Copyright and Database Rights Notice form part of these terms.

Third-party names, trade marks and products may appear as subjects of historical photographs or descriptive catalogue information. Their appearance does not imply sponsorship, endorsement or affiliation.

7. Archive descriptions and provenance

Archive records may contain historic captions, inventory shorthand, working descriptions or attributions that continue to be researched. A named person, object, brand, event, owner, date or location may be subject to verification.

We take reasonable care when publishing catalogue information, but do not warrant that every description is complete or error-free. Qualification such as catalogued as, believed to be, associated with or unverified forms part of the description and must not be removed when the information is repeated.

If you identify a possible error or hold relevant evidence, use our Rights Claims, Takedown and Corrections process.

8. Enquiries and negotiations

An enquiry does not oblige us to supply an image, conduct research, reserve rights or enter into a licence. Availability, price, exclusivity, clearance needs, delivery time and permitted use remain subject to written agreement.

Unless we expressly agree otherwise, discussions, estimates and draft proposals are non-binding. A licence is granted only when we issue or sign a written Licence Confirmation or other agreement identifying the licensed material and permitted use, and any required fee has been paid.

If we provide an account, research portal, download link or restricted preview, it is personal to the authorised recipient. You must keep access details secure, notify us promptly of suspected misuse and not share access unless we agree in writing.

We may suspend or withdraw access where necessary to protect rights, security, users or the service.

The website may link to third-party services or sources. We do not control them and are not responsible for their availability, security, privacy practices or content. A link does not amount to endorsement.

You may link to Archive.London provided the link is accurate, lawful, does not use framing or misleading presentation, and does not imply an association that does not exist. We may ask you to remove a link where it is misleading, unlawful or harmful.

11. Website availability and security

We use reasonable care to operate the website, but it is provided on an as available basis. We do not promise uninterrupted access, freedom from errors, compatibility with every device or that the website will always be secure or free from harmful code.

You are responsible for your own systems, browser, network security and backups.

12. Liability

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability where it would be unlawful to do so, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.

If you use the website for business purposes, we exclude, to the fullest extent permitted by law, implied conditions, warranties and representations relating to the website. We will not be liable for loss of profit, revenue, business, opportunity, anticipated savings, goodwill, data or any indirect or consequential loss arising from use of, or inability to use, the website.

If you use the website as a consumer, we are responsible for losses that are a foreseeable result of our breach of these terms or failure to use reasonable care and skill. We are not responsible for business losses arising from consumer use.

Nothing on the website is legal, financial, historical-authentication, valuation, conservation or other professional advice.

13. Indemnity for unlawful use

If you use website material in breach of these terms, you are responsible for losses, liabilities, claims and reasonable enforcement costs caused by that breach, subject to applicable law. This provision does not require a consumer to indemnify us beyond what the law permits.

14. Privacy and cookies

Our Privacy Notice explains how we process personal data. Our Cookie Policy explains storage and access technologies. Both form part of the website's legal information.

15. Changes

We may amend these terms to reflect legal, technical or operational changes. The date at the top shows the latest revision. Material changes apply from publication unless a later date is stated. Terms governing an existing image licence may be changed only as permitted by that licence.

16. Severability and waiver

If a provision is found invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue in effect. A delay in enforcing a right is not a waiver of that right.

17. Governing law and jurisdiction

These terms and any non-contractual dispute are governed by the law of England and Wales.

If you are a business, the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction.

If you are a consumer resident elsewhere in the United Kingdom, you may also have the right to bring proceedings in the courts of the part of the United Kingdom where you live. Mandatory consumer protections remain unaffected.
