The shoe that belongs indoors

Slippers occupy a private territory of dress. They belong to mornings, evenings, bedrooms, hotel rooms and the point at which public appearance gives way to comfort. Yet their materials and decoration can be every bit as considered as formal footwear.

Robert Harper’s inventory records 40 unique shots across 181 total frames, described as slippers and mainly women’s styles.

Robert Harper and the intimacy of objects

For the photographer of slippers and domestic footwear, London followed a Scottish childhood in Glasgow and Islay. Harper received a camera at seven and made his first sale at fourteen with a photograph of The Who in concert. Photography studies led to two years at Condé Nast, directly assisting David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Lester Bookbinder.

That apprenticeship taught him how styling and light can give even modest objects emotional presence. Harper later established his own studio and built an approximately thirty five year career.

The slippers and domestic footwear photographs form part of Harper’s magazine and commercial archive. He worked regularly for Elle and The Telegraph Magazine for more than fifteen years. Other editorial credits included Vogue, Tatler, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, The Face, Wallpaper and Harpers & Queen. Across his broader career, confirmed clients included De Beers, Boots, Heinz, Diageo, Harrods, Selfridges, the BBC, CBS Records and Montblanc.

His work across fashion, interiors and department-store culture gives this domestic-footwear group a sophisticated editorial setting.

Comfort as social history

Slippers can record changing ideas of femininity, leisure, warmth and the well-appointed home. Materials may range from practical textiles to decorative finishes intended for a luxurious dressing room.

Archive.London presents the images as domestic and fashion history. Gender, material, maker and date should be assigned only where the object or records support them.
