The first shoes of a life

Children’s shoes carry an emotional scale larger than their size. They suggest first steps, school days, weather, play and the speed at which childhood changes. Baby shoes in particular often survive as keepsakes long after they are useful.

Robert Harper’s inventory records 37 unique shots across 146 total frames of children’s, toddler and baby shoes, boots and pumps.

Harper’s ability to find character in objects

For the photographer of children’s, toddler and baby footwear, London followed a Scottish childhood in Glasgow and Islay. Harper received a camera at seven and made his first sale at fourteen with a photograph of The Who in concert. Photography studies led to two years at Condé Nast, directly assisting David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Lester Bookbinder.

The apprenticeship taught him how scale, styling and light could give personality to products. Harper later founded his own studio and built an approximately thirty five year career.

The children’s, toddler and baby footwear collection belongs to Harper’s broader editorial and commercial practice. He worked regularly for Elle and The Telegraph Magazine for more than fifteen years. Other editorial credits included Vogue, Tatler, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, The Face, Wallpaper and Harpers & Queen. Across his broader career, confirmed clients included De Beers, Boots, Heinz, Diageo, Harrods, Selfridges, the BBC, CBS Records and Montblanc.

His magazine and retail experience gives this childhood collection warmth without sacrificing design precision.

Childhood, commerce and memory

Small footwear documents construction, safety, fashion and social expectation. A sturdy school shoe, soft baby slipper or playful pump can reveal how adults imagined the needs and appearance of children.

Archive.London presents the images as fashion and social history. Age range, maker and date should be identified only where packaging or markings support them.
