Four names, one extensive archive group

This is a collection with both breadth and intriguing internal connections. The inventory records 235 unique shots and 235 total frames associated with Anna Jacyszyn, Susan Clements, Marie McLaughlin and Yuko Katori. Susan Clements and Marie McLaughlin are expressly described as opera singers. A cross-reference directs researchers to the archive’s famous portraits category for Yuko Katori.

Rather than flattening these subjects into a generic “women in music” page, Archive.London keeps their names visible and preserves the catalogue’s relationships. The boundaries between individual sittings or sequences remain subjects for frame-level research.

The photographer behind the portraits

Robert Harper was born in Scotland and grew up between Glasgow and Islay. He was given his first camera at seven and sold a photograph of The Who in concert when he was fourteen. That early success introduced a thread of music photography that would run through his approximately thirty five year career.

After moving to London to study photography, Harper spent two formative years at Condé Nast, directly assisting David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Lester Bookbinder. Working beside them offered a practical education in portraiture, fashion, dramatic light and commercial control. Harper later established his own studio.

For more than fifteen years he contributed regularly to Elle and The Telegraph Magazine. His wider editorial work included Vogue, Tatler, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, The Face, Wallpaper and Harpers & Queen. Confirmed clients included De Beers, Boots, Heinz, Diageo, Harrods, Selfridges, the BBC, CBS Records and Montblanc.

This background positions the 235 frames within an important professional network of music, publishing and portrait culture.

The social life of the formal portrait

Portraits of singers and musicians often circulate between publicity, programmes, record companies, editorial profiles and personal promotion. The same sitting may carry both artistic dignity and practical commercial purpose. Harper’s experience across magazines and major clients equipped him to negotiate that balance.

The inventory identifies the names but does not allocate a frame count to each person. Individual allocations remain subject to visual verification. The Yuko Katori reference connects this group with the portrait collection.
