Footwear designed to move
Sport changes the shoe from an item of dress into a piece of equipment. Grip, speed, balance and protection determine form. Rollerblades and skates make movement visible through wheels, while football boots and deck shoes answer entirely different surfaces.

Robert Harper and the engineered object
The sports shoes, rollerblades and roller skates photographs draw on an education that began with a camera at seven. Scottish-born Harper grew up between Glasgow and Islay and sold a The Who concert photograph aged fourteen. He studied photography in London before two years directly assisting David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Lester Bookbinder at Condé Nast.
That apprenticeship taught him how function can be made visually compelling through exact composition. Harper later founded his own studio and built an approximately thirty five year career.
The sports shoes, rollerblades and roller skates photographs form part of Harper’s magazine and commercial archive. He worked regularly for Elle and The Telegraph Magazine for more than fifteen years. Other editorial credits included Vogue, Tatler, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, The Face, Wallpaper and Harpers & Queen. Across his broader career, confirmed clients included De Beers, Boots, Heinz, Diageo, Harrods, Selfridges, the BBC, CBS Records and Montblanc.
His ability to move between style and technology gives the sports-footwear group particular range.
