Vehicles are practical objects with a persistent romantic streak. Even parked, they imply departure.
The transport inventory contains 165 unique photographs across 293 frames. Vehicles, mechanical parts, tools, Brands Hatch and a Shadow microlight appear both as designed objects and within the places where they operate.
Machines with character
Harper's commercial still-life training made him attentive to engineering detail. Metal, glass, paint and moving parts require the same precision as a watch, though on a less intimate scale.
Location changes the story. A vehicle on a circuit carries speed and competition. A machine in a workshop reveals labour and maintenance. The Shadow microlight joins transport to Harper's deeper aviation holdings, where the BAC and English Electric Lightning dominate an exceptional collection.
Movement across the archive
Transport connects Harper's motor racing, travel, corporate and landscape photography. His assignments carried him from London to Manhattan, the Côte d'Azur and locations across Europe. The means of getting there often became visually interesting in its own right.
The collection may support transport history, motoring publishing, engineering features, period productions and documentary research.
