A shell is architecture made by a living creature. A pebble is landscape reduced to the hand. A fossil introduces time on a scale that makes fashion seasons seem delightfully brief.
Robert Harper's natural-history still lifes contain 29 unique photographs across 87 frames. Shells, pebbles and fossils are photographed as specimens, textures and sculptural forms.
Nature under studio light
Harper's precision with jewellery and designed objects translated beautifully to natural subjects. Spirals, ridges and mineral surfaces could be studied closely without losing their sense of origin.
The images sit between documentation and abstraction. A shell may be scientifically recognisable while also becoming a study in line. Pebbles arranged together create tonal rhythm. Fossils carry both physical pattern and deep historical suggestion.
These photographs connect the marine, botanical, prehistoric and abstract sections of the archive.
