Water and underwater

Water, the element that refuses to keep still

Explore 203 water and underwater photographs by Robert Harper, including mineral water, fish, newts and experimental submerged still life.

Water changes every object it touches. It bends light, interrupts colour and turns the familiar into something briefly uncertain.

Robert Harper's dedicated water and underwater collection contains 203 unique photographs across 241 frames. Mineral water, fish and newts share the inventory with broader underwater experiments.

A studio transformed

Harper used water within his cosmetics work, including lipsticks photographed underwater and in ice. Such images turn product still life into a small visual event. Bubbles, refraction and movement introduce chance into an otherwise controlled studio.

Fish and newts bring living subjects into the same unstable element. Focus, reflection and movement must be anticipated rather than arranged, while glass vessels can add another layer of optical complication.

From glass to open sea

The collection links naturally to Harper's later marine and superyacht work, together with landscapes, seascapes and watersports. Water appears at every scale, from a controlled liquid surface to an open horizon.

For a photographer raised partly on Islay, coast and water also carry biographical resonance, while the locations of individual photographs remain separate questions for research.
