Sexual Culture, Products and Symbolic Objects

Intimacy as material and editorial culture

The visual culture of sex extends far beyond the body. Books, restraints, condoms, aphrodisiacs and commercial products reveal changing attitudes to intimacy, safety, desire, taboo and humour. Robert Harper’s archive approaches these subjects through objects and editorial construction.

The inventory records 164 unique shots across 380 total frames. It includes a Melvyn Bragg book cover, a chastity belt, bondage-related objects, handcuffs, whips, an aphrodisiac, condoms and other sexual products.

Robert Harper’s editorial experience

The training behind sexual culture, products and symbolic objects included two years at Condé Nast, where Harper directly assisted David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Lester Bookbinder after studying photography in London. Born in Scotland and raised between Glasgow and Islay, he had received a camera at seven and sold a concert photograph of The Who at fourteen.

That experience placed him within publishing traditions where sexuality, fashion and cultural debate were often negotiated through carefully constructed images. Harper later founded his own studio and built an approximately thirty five year career.

The sexual culture, products and symbolic objects collection belongs to Harper’s broader editorial and commercial practice. He worked regularly for Elle and The Telegraph Magazine for more than fifteen years. Other editorial credits included Vogue, Tatler, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, The Face, Wallpaper and Harpers & Queen. Across his broader career, confirmed clients included De Beers, Boots, Heinz, Diageo, Harrods, Selfridges, the BBC, CBS Records and Montblanc.

This professional context gives the category editorial provenance without assigning a publication or commission to individual frames where records are absent.

Archive.London presents the collection for adult cultural, publishing and design research. The objects are considered within the history of consensual intimacy, editorial symbolism and contraceptive products.

Book-cover content, product branding and dates require frame-level verification. The collection concerns adult material culture.
