Easter

Easter, spring dressed in chocolate and ribbon

Discover Vintage easter photographs in Robert Harper's British editorial archive, with original images preserved for cultural research and rights-managed licensing.

Easter enters the editorial calendar with excellent accessories: eggs, chicks, flowers, chocolate and the first persuasive suggestion that winter may finally have left.

Robert Harper's Easter collection contains 62 unique photographs across 123 frames. Seasonal products and Easter eggs appear with a chick and related action sequences, bringing living movement into a carefully styled commercial subject.

A season designed for colour

Easter imagery balances tradition with retail imagination. Eggs offer simple sculptural form. Foil and packaging introduce reflection. Chicks supply warmth, unpredictability and the strong possibility that the set will need rearranging.

The collection connects naturally to Harper's food, confectionery, botanical, gift and children's material. Those related categories retain their independent totals.

Robert Harper and the magazine calendar

Born in Scotland and raised in Glasgow and on Islay, Harper received his first camera at seven and sold a photograph of The Who in concert at fourteen. He moved to London to study photography and spent two formative years at the Condé Nast studios assisting David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Lester Bookbinder.

He later established his own studio and worked regularly for Elle and The Telegraph Magazine for more than fifteen years. His wider published work included Vogue, Tatler, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, The Face, Wallpaper and Harpers & Queen.

Magazine photography works months ahead of ordinary life. Easter sets may be created before spring has arrived, just as Christmas can be photographed in summer. Harper's studio experience allowed him to manufacture seasonal atmosphere through colour, light and carefully selected objects.

His commercial clients included Heinz, Harrods, Selfridges, Boots, Diageo, De Beers, the BBC, CBS Records and Montblanc. Food, retail and consumer publishing therefore formed an established part of his professional world.

Seasonal history

Packaging, illustration and decorative style place Easter images within their decade. The archive may support seasonal publishing, retail history, confectionery features, exhibitions and period productions.
