The domestic world built around an animal

The things made for pets reveal almost as much about people as they do about animals. Bowls, collars, leads, grooming products, coats, treats and toys turn care into a material culture of affection, practicality and occasional extravagance.

Robert Harper’s inventory records 79 unique shots across 186 total frames. It includes food bowls, grooming products, toys, collars, leads, coats, litter trays, pet treats and an item catalogued as a “tamagochi”, preserving the language of an early digital-pet era.

Robert Harper and the eloquence of ordinary objects

Harper was born in Scotland and grew up between Glasgow and Islay. He received his first camera at seven and sold a photograph of The Who in concert at fourteen. He moved to London to study photography, then spent two formative years at Condé Nast, directly assisting David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Lester Bookbinder.

The experience taught him how styling, light and technical control could give even modest objects editorial character. Harper later established his own studio and built an approximately thirty five year career.

For more than fifteen years he contributed regularly to Elle and The Telegraph Magazine. His wider credits included Vogue, Tatler, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, The Face, Wallpaper and Harpers & Queen. Confirmed clients included De Beers, Boots, Heinz, Diageo, Harrods, Selfridges, the BBC, CBS Records and Montblanc.

His range across magazines, retailers and commercial still life gives this domestic category serious visual provenance.

Care, design and changing pet culture

The collection charts the expansion of products around companion animals. Practical tools sit beside fashion and play, while the catalogued digital pet introduces a witty boundary between living companionship and electronic simulation.

Archive.London presents these as design and social-history images, not generic pet-shop stock. Manufacturers and dates should be tagged only from visible evidence.
