A working archive in depth
The third fragrance group in Robert Harper’s physical inventory contains 111 unique shots across 411 total frames. Its catalogue description is simply “Fragrances”, leaving the pictures themselves to supply the richer taxonomy of houses, bottles, periods and editorial treatments.
That simplicity is useful. It prevents unverified assumptions and makes digitisation an act of discovery. Nearly four frames for each composed study on average also preserve the working decisions behind the finished image.
Robert Harper’s professional foundation
Robert Harper was born in Scotland and grew up between Glasgow and Islay. He received his first camera at seven and sold a photograph taken at a concert by The Who when he was fourteen. He moved to London to study photography and spent two formative years at Condé Nast, directly assisting David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Lester Bookbinder.
The apprenticeship placed him at the centre of influential fashion, portrait and commercial production. Harper later established his own studio and developed an approximately thirty five year career.
For more than fifteen years he contributed regularly to Elle and The Telegraph Magazine. His wider editorial credits included Vogue, Tatler, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, The Face, Wallpaper and Harpers & Queen. Confirmed clients included De Beers, Boots, Heinz, Diageo, Harrods, Selfridges, the BBC, CBS Records and Montblanc.
His direct experience with luxury, retail and beauty publishing gives this otherwise broadly labelled group a strong authored identity.
From physical folder to intelligent catalogue
Archive.London presents the group as a research collection rather than thin search inventory. Bottle form, lighting method and material can all become meaningful routes through the page.
