Harper’s lifetime behind the camera
Born in Scotland, Robert Harper grew up between Glasgow and Islay. He received his first camera at seven and sold a concert photograph of The Who at fourteen. He moved to London to study photography, followed by two formative years at Condé Nast directly assisting David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Lester Bookbinder.
Those years gave him close experience of portrait immediacy, theatrical fashion and meticulous commercial technique. Harper later founded his own studio and built an approximately thirty five year career.
For more than fifteen years he contributed regularly to Elle and The Telegraph Magazine. His wider work appeared in Vogue, Tatler, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, The Face, Wallpaper and Harpers & Queen. Confirmed clients included De Beers, Boots, Heinz, Diageo, Harrods, Selfridges, the BBC, CBS Records and Montblanc.
