Building imagination piece by piece

Wooden toys and interlocking bricks offer two distinct pleasures. One emphasises material, grain and traditional form; the other creates a modular system from which almost anything can be built.

Robert Harper’s inventory records 149 unique shots across 450 total frames of wooden toys and Lego. It is a major archive of construction, learning and play.

Robert Harper and the designed childhood object

The training behind wooden toys and lego included two years at Condé Nast, where Harper directly assisted David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Lester Bookbinder after studying photography in London. Born in Scotland and raised between Glasgow and Islay, he had received a camera at seven and sold a concert photograph of The Who at fourteen.

That experience gave him control of colour, form and grouped composition. Harper later founded his own studio and built an approximately thirty five year career.

The wooden toys and lego studies belong to Harper’s broader archive of fashion, objects and cultural life. He worked regularly for Elle and The Telegraph Magazine for more than fifteen years. Other editorial credits included Vogue, Tatler, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, The Face, Wallpaper and Harpers & Queen. Across his broader career, confirmed clients included De Beers, Boots, Heinz, Diageo, Harrods, Selfridges, the BBC, CBS Records and Montblanc.

His product expertise allows toys to retain both design clarity and imaginative character.

Craft tradition meets modular modernity

Wooden toys can preserve carpentry, educational theory and durable forms, while Lego records changing sets, colours and popular themes. The trade mark identifies a photographed subject and does not imply a direct commission.

Archive.London will identify set numbers, makers and dates only where packaging or markings support them. Historical toys should not be assumed to meet current standards.
