Accessories with a flourish
Some objects complete an outfit. Others complete an entrance. The umbrella, walking cane and hand-held fan have all moved between necessity, etiquette and theatrical display, lending posture and personality to the person who carries them.
Robert Harper’s catalogue contains 85 unique shots across 230 total frames devoted to these elegant hand-held accessories. The imagery invites close attention to handles, ferrules, ribs, fabric, carving and ornament, while the objects themselves evoke rain-soaked London pavements, formal promenades and rooms where a fan could communicate almost as eloquently as conversation.
Robert Harper’s eye for gesture and detail
The training behind umbrellas, walking canes and hand-held fans included two years at Condé Nast, where Harper directly assisted David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Lester Bookbinder after studying photography in London. Born in Scotland and raised between Glasgow and Islay, he had received a camera at seven and sold a concert photograph of The Who at fourteen.
Harper later established his own studio and developed an approximately thirty five year career across fashion, portraiture, still life and advertising. For more than fifteen years he contributed regularly to Elle and The Telegraph Magazine. His photographs also appeared in Vogue, Tatler, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, The Face, Wallpaper and Harpers & Queen.
Confirmed clients included De Beers, Boots, Heinz, Diageo, Harrods, Selfridges, the BBC, CBS Records and Montblanc. Work for leading editorial titles and retailers sharpened his sense of how an accessory can suggest a whole character without showing a face.
Style, ceremony and social codes
The cane can be practical, ceremonial or rakish. The umbrella combines engineering with fashion. The fan has a long decorative and social history, appearing across court dress, evening style, performance and souvenir culture. Precise makers, materials, periods and cultural origins should be verified object by object.
Presented by Archive.London, these are high-value studies of design and social custom. They offer editors, historians, designers and collectors a visual vocabulary of manners, manufacture and personal style rather than anonymous stock illustration.
