Speed written across snow

Skiing and snowboarding combine landscape, equipment, clothing and movement with unusual visual force. Bright surfaces and fast figures make the mountain both stage and obstacle.

Robert Harper’s inventory records 149 unique shots across 319 total frames of ski and snowboard equipment, clothes and athletes.

Robert Harper between fashion and action

For the photographer of skiing and snowboarding, London followed a Scottish childhood in Glasgow and Islay. Harper received a camera at seven and made his first sale at fourteen with a photograph of The Who in concert. Photography studies led to two years at Condé Nast, directly assisting David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Lester Bookbinder.

The apprenticeship gave him command of both clothing and movement. Harper later established his own studio and built an approximately thirty five year career.

The skiing and snowboarding collection draws together Harper’s editorial and commercial interests. He worked regularly for Elle and The Telegraph Magazine for more than fifteen years. Other editorial credits included Vogue, Tatler, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, The Face, Wallpaper and Harpers & Queen. Across his broader career, confirmed clients included De Beers, Boots, Heinz, Diageo, Harrods, Selfridges, the BBC, CBS Records and Montblanc.

That overlap of fashion and documentary skill gives the winter-sports archive unusual breadth.

Mountain equipment and resort culture

The photographs can reveal changing board and ski design, protective clothing and the style of winter resorts. Athletes, places and events require evidence-led identification.

Archive.London presents the material as historical sport and design imagery. Equipment shown should not be assumed to meet current safety standards.
