Footwear reduced to air and line
Sandals and flip-flops reveal the foot rather than enclosing it. Straps, sole and fastening must do the work of a whole shoe, creating forms that can feel ancient, practical, glamorous or playfully disposable.
The first Robert Harper collection contains 100 unique shots across 342 total frames. Its scale creates a broad design archive of open footwear rather than a seasonal handful of product images.
Robert Harper’s fashion and travel vocabulary
The training behind sandals and flip-flops, collection one included two years at Condé Nast, where Harper directly assisted David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Lester Bookbinder after studying photography in London. Born in Scotland and raised between Glasgow and Islay, he had received a camera at seven and sold a concert photograph of The Who at fourteen.
That experience gave him control of fashion styling and commercial light. Harper later established his own studio and built an approximately thirty five year career.
The sandals and flip-flops, collection one collection sits within Harper’s sustained fashion and studio work. He worked regularly for Elle and The Telegraph Magazine for more than fifteen years. Other editorial credits included Vogue, Tatler, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, The Face, Wallpaper and Harpers & Queen. Across his broader career, confirmed clients included De Beers, Boots, Heinz, Diageo, Harrods, Selfridges, the BBC, CBS Records and Montblanc.
His archive moves easily between footwear, beaches, travel and lifestyle, giving these objects a richer context than generic summer stock.
From resort dressing to everyday utility
The collection may span simple rubber flip-flops, decorative sandals and more formal open shoes. Materials, brands and intended uses should be identified at frame level.
Archive.London presents the images as design and social history, showing how ideas of leisure, climate and fashion meet in a minimal object.
