Robert Harper and fashion as form
For the photographer of platform shoes and wedges, London followed a Scottish childhood in Glasgow and Islay. Harper received a camera at seven and made his first sale at fourteen with a photograph of The Who in concert. Photography studies led to two years at Condé Nast, directly assisting David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Lester Bookbinder.
That apprenticeship trained him to recognise the power of silhouette and proportion. Harper later established his own studio and built an approximately thirty five year career.
The platform shoes and wedges studies belong to Harper’s work across magazine fashion and product photography. He worked regularly for Elle and The Telegraph Magazine for more than fifteen years. Other editorial credits included Vogue, Tatler, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, The Face, Wallpaper and Harpers & Queen.
