The office was once a noisy arrangement of paper, telephones, typewriters and machines with very specific jobs.
Robert Harper's dedicated office folder contains 25 unique photographs across 85 frames. Typewriters, equipment and stationery form a small collection that links to far larger holdings in corporate life, communications and technology.
Work through its objects
An office reveals its period instantly. Typewriters carry mechanical rhythm. Calculators, filing systems and fax machines speak of efficiency through physical presence. Paper once moved between desks because information had weight.
Harper photographed these objects with the clarity developed through commercial still life. His corporate work adds people, construction, communications and London working life, allowing the smaller office collection to sit within a much broader social record.
The dedicated office count remains separate from related corporate, communications and stationery holdings.
