Guerlain Fragrances

View Guerlain perfume bottle photographs from the Robert Harper Photograph Library, a British editorial collection available for research and image licensing.

Guerlain’s name is deeply associated with the culture of French perfumery, where bottle, label and scent are treated as parts of one composed identity. Robert Harper’s archive contains 36 unique Guerlain fragrance shots across 108 total frames.

The collection is extensive enough to move beyond one hero product. It can reveal variety in bottle design and the different visual strategies used to make glass, liquid and ornament persuasive on the page.

Robert Harper and the discipline of luxury still life

Harper was born in Scotland and grew up between Glasgow and Islay. He received his first camera at seven and sold a photograph taken at a concert by The Who at fourteen. He moved to London to study photography, followed by two formative years at Condé Nast directly assisting David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Lester Bookbinder.

That experience offered first-hand lessons in personality, drama and technical exactitude. Harper established his own studio and went on to build an approximately thirty five year career.

The Guerlain studies belong to Harper’s wider practice in fragrance, retail and editorial photography. He worked regularly for Elle and The Telegraph Magazine for more than fifteen years. Other editorial credits included Vogue, Tatler, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, The Face, Wallpaper and Harpers & Queen. Across his broader career, confirmed clients included De Beers, Boots, Heinz, Diageo, Harrods, Selfridges, the BBC, CBS Records and Montblanc.

Harper’s documented luxury and retail experience gives the Guerlain collection a credible editorial lineage. The catalogue establishes the product subject, not necessarily the commissioner.

The visual genealogy of perfume

Fragrance bottles preserve histories of craft, branding and personal ritual. Across 36 compositions, researchers may be able to trace differences in shape, stopper, typography and presentation. Those details can connect the images to particular products or periods once properly verified.

Archive.London positions the photographs for beauty publishing, exhibitions, design research and cultural histories of perfume. Original crops and colour are part of Harper’s photographic authorship.
